Being Proactive in These Times

Dear Families of Dalton Local Schools:

During the course of the last couple of weeks there have been a number of
discussions with respect to school safety. I am writing to share with you that we as a
District are very aware of what is happening in our area and the nation, and we are
being proactive. Although I do not want to be too specific for the sake of safety, I do
want you to better understand some of the efforts we have in place and are taking to
help ensure all who enter our school buildings are safe.

Like all other school districts in the State of Ohio, we have detailed State Mandated
Safety Plans, which have been approved by Homeland Security and are updated
each year. Each month our District practices different safety drills. In addition to
fire drills, all our schools practice announced and unannounced safety drills. Our
staff will talk through different safety scenarios with students to help them
understand what they should do if they are involved in a safety situation. In
addition, each of our schools’ doors are locked, and all visitors must be allowed
entrance into our buildings. If any visitor in a building does not have a visitor’s
badge, staff members know to approach the person to ask if they can help them.
Lastly, our District has a School Resource Officer who is on our campus and in our
schools throughout each school day.

On Tuesday at our Board of Education Meeting, the Board agreed to take steps to
help increase the safety supports within our District. As an immediate response,
our District will be bolstering our School Resource Officer supports by increasing
the number of School Resource Officers and their hours. Over the next three
months (the remainder of the school year) the District will be collaborating with
law enforcement and school safety professionals to research what safety measures
will be the best for us to put into place next school year.

I truly believe the foundation upon which all things are built is relationships. The
relationships your child has with their peers, teachers, and all District staff are vital
for your child to feel safe and secure in school and be ready to learn. We strive to
build positive, professional, and trusting relationships with all our students and
stakeholders. We want our students to know there are adults in school with whom
they can talk if they have any concerns.

Please know, if you have any questions or concerns you may contact your child’s
principal or me, as we are more than willing to talk with you.

Thank you for what you do at home to reassure your child; Dalton is a great place to
learn.
